Frans Vester was a leading teacher, editor, and
scholar as well as one of the most influential
performers on historical flutes in late 20th-century
Europe.
He entered the Amsterdam Conservatory at the
age of 15 and premiered the Ibert concert there
four years later. His Danzi quintet premiered
Schoenberg's wind Quintet Op. 26 in 1958, and
he later toured and recorded baroque repertoire
with Frans Brueggen and Gustav Leonhardt. He edited
hundreds of 18th and 19th-century pieces for flute
and compiled valuable repertoire catalogs for
the instrument.
Vester is shown in the photograph at left delivering
a talk at the Finnish flute week in Tampere in
August 1985 in which he contrasted the uniformity
of modern flute playing (at the time) with the
richness and diversity of expression in earlier
periods.
